Carol Basener - currently president of the Greater Rochester Rose Society (GRRS).I've been a member for 5 years and president for 2 years. I've been a Consulting Rosarian for a year and have clerked at two Rose Shows. I have just started showing roses at rose shows and won two First Place ribbons.
Came to Rochester 12 years ago and planted a few rose bushes. The buds were hanging their heads and I didn't know why. Went to a workshop at Maplewood Gardens, the Rosarian looked at the specimen and said "thrips". I was hooked. I joined because I needed to learn.
I support organic gardening because the one year I did spray, all my beautiful earth worms died. GRRS and the American Rose Society is a tremendous source of information to keep my worms healthy which keeps my roses healthy.
The Greater Rochester Rose Society was established in 1919, and is affiliated with the American Rose Society. We are one of the oldest continually-meeting societies of amateur rosarians in the country. During its history, the society has been honored at the local, state, and national levels for outstanding instruction on rose culture.
Growing the rose, our national flower, is a wonderful hobby. Whether a person has one rose, or one hundred, there is always something new to be learned and shared about good methods of rose-growing. A select group of members, recognized by the American Rose Society as "Consulting Rosarians", are willing and able to answer questions and give advice about rose-growing.
